Nonsurgical Therapy

What are the stages of gum disease?
Gingivitis is the early stage, with red, swollen gums that bleed when you brush, and it is reversible. Left untreated, it progresses to periodontitis, where pockets form and bone is lost, and then to advanced periodontitis with loose teeth.
Does scaling and root planing hurt?
The area is numbed with local anesthetic, so most patients feel pressure but not pain. Mild tenderness for a few days afterward is normal, and sedation is available if you are anxious.
What is crown lengthening?
Crown lengthening reshapes gum and sometimes bone to expose more of the tooth. It is used functionally to make room for a crown or filling, and cosmetically to correct a gummy smile. Full healing takes about 2 to 3 months.
Do I need gum disease treated before dental implants?
